I will be giving a talk at GenCon Indy this year about advertising: Advertising: Effective Brand Communication. There are so many topics that can be covered in a talk like this, I need your help determining which ones to focus on.

Here are some broad areas...

(1) Print Advertising: Discussing a short list of things people should consider, such as headlines, graphics, typography, etc.

(2) Audio Advertising: Producing quality audio ads and placing them on podcasts, radio.

(3) Online Advertising: Banner advertising and what to look (out) for.

(4) Video Advertising: Tips for a quality video ad.

I'd like the talk to help companies understand that there is a reason behind advertising - generally, you want people to buy something. However, you must always use advertising that supports your brand, or you're working against yourself.

Anyway, I could use your help in this way...

(1) What do you want to know about advertising?

(2) What do you see are the topics at that junction between advertising and brand management?

(3) What tools can I give someone in 43 minutes that will encourage them to think differently about their own advertising and how it impacts their company?

I don't know about tools but you definitely need to emphasize that advertising doesn't have to be expensive to be effective. In a tight economy, advertising budgets are the first to get slashed, and they should be the last. Maybe some good ideas for a guerrilla marketing campaign might be in order?

Likewise, I suggest being prepared to offer advertising advice to retailers (in case that's your audience), many of whom don't seem to consider advertising as a viable business practice, or just a waste of money.

Really, the subject of advertising is so broad, I don't know how I can cover it in one session. I think the first thing I'll need to do is take a quick audience poll and find out who is sitting in the seats.

And be prepared to talk about any of the topics, based on who raises their hands.

I've never been to GennCon. Who usually goes and who usually attends seminars? I'd imagine that an advertising seminar would attract business owners operating on a shoestring budget. Maximizing ROI on advertising dollars/yen/quetzels.

That's a pretty interesting topic for any business owner.
